THE TIME IS NOW - FIX THE HIGHWAY TRUST FUND
We are at a critical juncture. Currently, the Department of Transportation expects the Highway Trust Fund (HTF) will become insolvent by mid-July. Congress must act to restore financial stability to the HTF. To help keep the pressure on lawmakers, the third Rally For Roads is being held in conjunction with the Transportation Construction Coalition Fly-In. The Rally is set for 8:30 a.m. June 11th on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. The Rally is free to attend. All interested stakeholders are invited to come. Congressional transportation leaders will speak to the crowd before attendees fan out across the Hill to meet with their members of Congress.
The fact is, America’s surface transportation network used to be the envy of the world. It now ranks 23rd in the world. Many of our roads, highways, and bridges have far surpassed their life span and would qualify for Medicare. Americans waste time and fuel idling in traffic due to increased congestion, which damages the environment and deprives us of time with family and friends. The main source of revenue for keeping our roads in repair and restoring our nation’s transportation network – the HTF – is running out of money.
America has always been a nation of builders, whether it was the intercontinental railroad, the Interstate Highway system or our port and dam system. We must focus on this national priority because an efficient and cost-effective surface transportation network is essential to economic prosperity, job creation, global competitiveness, and the quality of life American’s enjoy.
Join us June 11th in sending a message to Congress that America can’t wait. We need for them to do their business and fund the nation’s surface transportation system now!
